Trump announced a 100% tariff on chips and semiconductors, with "Made in the USA" being exempted.

Date Time£º2025.08.08
US President Trump stated that the US will impose a 100% tariff on chips and semiconductors, but will not target companies that "build factories in the US".
According to CCTV News, on August 6th local time, US President Trump stated that the United States will impose tariffs of approximately 100% on "all chips and semiconductors entering the United States", but will not target companies that have established factories in the US.
That afternoon, Trump announced this news together with Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, at a press conference held in the Oval Office of the White House. Cook also announced that Apple would invest an additional 100 billion dollars in research and manufacturing in the United States over the next four years. Previously, the company had already committed to investing 500 billion dollars in February. Thus, Apple's investment commitment to the United States has reached 600 billion dollars.
Trump emphasized, "We will impose very high tariffs on chips and semiconductors. But for companies like Apple, the good news is that if you build a factory in the US or commit to building one in the US, there will be no charges."
In other words, we will impose a tariff of approximately 100% on chips and semiconductors. But if you build a factory in the United States, you won't be charged. Trump previously stated that the tariffs on chips and semiconductors could be announced as early as next week.
Analysts point out that this move by Trump has intensified the pressure on companies to produce products in the United States. However, specific details regarding how much of a product a company needs to manufacture in the US to be eligible for tariff exemptions are still unclear. Apart from Apple, several top chip manufacturers such as TSMC, NVIDIA and GlobalFoundries have previously committed to producing some of their products in the US.
According to Trump, if a company promises to build a factory in the US but fails to do so in the end, it will once again face tariffs and counter-tariffs. However, some experts have warned that import tariffs will make it more difficult for Americans to purchase these products, as rebuilding the supply chain takes time. And as chips and semiconductors are key components for almost all industries, additional tariffs may push up the prices of all products ranging from smartphones, laptops to household electronics.
According to data from the Semiconductor Industry Association of the United States, since 2020, companies within the US semiconductor ecosystem have announced over 130 projects, with a total investment exceeding 600 billion US dollars and creating and supporting more than 500,000 US jobs. The US Department of Commerce has also announced that it will provide 325.417 billion US dollars in grants and up to 5.85 billion US dollars in loans to 32 companies among 48 projects.
